Aging in Community

The “Aging in Community” model presents a proactive, grassroots initiative that intentionally creates supportive neighborhoods to enhance well-being and quality of life at home and as an integral part of the community for people of all ages, particularly boomers. “Aging in Community” is an initiative that fosters interdependence with increased opportunities for meaningful connection within one’s community. The currency for services under this new model is one of social capital and reciprocity rather than charity or the traditional financial capital.

"Aging in Community" neighborhoods intend by design and purpose to be:

  • Inclusive: Welcome people of all ages, ethnicities and abilities, especially elders.
  • Sustainable: Promote environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable lifestyles.
  • Healthy: Encourage wellness of the mind, body and spirit
  • Accessible: Provide easy access to the home and community (e.g.,universal design, accessible transportation).
  • Interdependent: Foster reciprocity and mutual support between family, friends, neighbors and the community-at-large.
  • Engaged: Promote opportunities for civic and social engagement, education, and creative expression.
